Build a Piggy Bank

Things You'll Need

Piggy banks are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased at your local retail stores. However, you do not need to purchase a piggy bank since there are other house items that can be used.
Here is what you'll need.
six 6x6 1/2 inch wood (plywood can work)
Nail set
Hammer
Table saw
Wood glue
Pencil
Measuring tape

Usually made of ceramic or porcelain, piggy banks often resemble a little pig but can look like whatever you want to make them look like. They are often used to teach and encourage children (and adults) to save money. Piggy banks teach self restraint and people often accumulate money through them. Individuals are encouraged not to get money out of piggy bank unless they absolutely need to since the only way to get the money out is to smash the piggy bank.

Steps to building a piggy bank

Step 1

Decide and draw a design that suits you. Also decide on the right dimensions for your box. An example will be six 6x6 1/2 inch thick wood. You can purchase the wood and cut out the dimensions accordingly or you can have store employees do so for you.

Step 2

Obtain six 6x6 1/2 inch thick wood (or any other dimension). This can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart etc. While at the store, be sure to pick up the rest of the items needed for this project.

Step 3

Align and glue four of the six pieces of wood, alternating between longer and shorter parts (or place longer sides opposite each other and do the same with shorter sides). Use a wood glue to glue the inside of the parts together. At this point, the project will start to look like either a rectangle or a square depending on the dimensions you chose. You can also use a few 6d finish nails to tack the edges of the unfinished box to ensure sturdiness.

Step 4

Glue the edges of one of the remaining parts on top of the box. Use 6d nails again to fasten the top of the box. Do not drive the nail all the way in.

Step 5

Repeat step 4 for the bottom of the box.

Step 6

Once completed, use a sharp knife, cutter, or saw to create a slit on one of the sides. The slit should be big enough to allow passage of small change and folded dollar bills.

Warnings

ยท To avoid serious injury, pay particular attention when using sharp objects: nails, knives, pointed ends of the wood, hammer, etc.
